How Does Video Help Social Media? Stephen Merchant Edition

Feb 27, 2023 | Marketing, Uncategorized

At Gnu we have a habit of looking after everyone else’s marketing and not our own. So, we’ve decided to take our own advice and implement the future marketing advice and trends we predicted for 2023. In our 22 – 23 infographic we told you that humour is 96% more likely to convert sales. We said that a large cross-section of marketers have predicted that lack of marketing strategy is one of the key reasons for failure. We also stated that one of the biggest trends for 2023 would be AI…

… So… we decided to launch a series of blogs about the things that really affect a video marketing strategy and then run them through AI software to redeliver them in the style of our favourite comedians.

Each week we’ll pick an industry and explore how a successful marketing strategy could look, sharing tips and hacks to optimise the reach. Then we’ll run it through the AI with the brief ‘rewrite this in the style of……’

We’ll be posting the original the day after so you can compare the two, so we’d love to hear how well you think Chat GPT has done – maybe out of 5. If there’s a topic or a style you’d like to see let us know by dropping a DM, an email, a text or a post to @GnuFilms. But for now let us begin with….

Stephen Merchant: How Does Video Help Social Media?

Greetings, my lovely readers! It’s your boy, the aspiring social media guru, Stephen Merchant, and I’m here to share my knowledge with you on the exciting world of social media marketing. I know, I know, it’s not exactly what you expect from me, but bear with me.

So, I was on Twitter the other day, scrolling through my feed and I thought to myself, ‘Stephen, you’re a funny guy, why not use social media to sell more tickets for your next stand-up tour?’ And then I immediately thought, ‘Wait, what do I know about social media? I still use a flip phone!’ But, I decided to give it a shot anyway.

I started posting snippets of my comedy sets, behind-the-scenes moments from my tours, and even live-streamed a few impromptu stand-up sets. And you know what? People loved it! They were sharing my posts, leaving comments, and even buying tickets to my shows.

It was like a light bulb went off in my head. I mean, why spend money on traditional advertising when you can reach so many people for free on social media? And, it’s not just about selling tickets, it’s about building a relationship with your audience and giving them a sneak peek into your world.

So, moral of the story, don’t let your lack of tech-savviness hold you back from using social media to sell more tickets. Who knows, maybe I’ll even be able to upgrade from my flip phone to a smartphone one day. Ha! Just kidding, I kind of like my flip phone, it’s a conversation starter.

Now, as a self-proclaimed expert in all things average, I can tell you that video marketing is the hottest new trend in town and you don’t want to miss out! Social media platforms have become an integral part of our daily lives, with billions of users spending countless hours scrolling, watching and interacting. As marketers, it’s an incredible opportunity to reach out to your target audience, showcase your products or services and boost sales.

Creating video content that’s both effective and impactful can be a bit intimidating, but don’t worry. I have some tips to help you get started…

It’s Who You Know

First of all, know your audience, not in a creepy way, obviously. You jus’ wanna make sure your content resonates with them not what time they put the bins out. Make stuff they wanna see, – so definitely don’t send them dic-pics -it’s bad for brand. You might also wanna consider something that solves a problem, and acknowledges that you know who they are and the challenges they face (like a better spam filter for dic-pics). The most important thing to remember is, it’s not about you it’s about them and what they need. And if you’re feeling daring, you might even want to consider influencer marketing, who knows, it might just work for your audience.

Tell a Story

And second, tell a story! Use storytelling techniques to create an emotional connection with your audience. A well-told story can make your video more memorable and engaging. We’re all human at the end of the day, despite what some fairly mean people have said about my glasses, so let’s remember that.

And what better way to do that than through video content? In today’s fast-paced, attention-seeking world, video content is a dynamic and engaging way to capture the hearts and minds of your customers.
The numbers speak for themselves, folks. Videos on social media are a hit!

  • YouTube has over 2 billion active users,
  • Facebook has 8 billion video views per day,
  • Instagram Stories boasts 500 million daily active users,
  • TikTok has a staggering 800 million monthly active users,
  • and even LinkedIn (myspace for businesses) has over 20 million video views a day!

It’s pretty amazing, isn’t it? It’s certainly more well-attended than my last stand-up tour. So, if you’re not taking advantage of video in your social media marketing, you’re missing out big time.

Pick Your Poison

Now, when it comes to choosing the type of videos to use, it all depends on your goals and target audience. You could opt for tutorials and how-to videos, live videos, short teasers, behind-the-scenes videos, customer testimonials, or explainer videos. The key is to ensure that your videos are high-quality and relevant to your audience.

That’s it, my friends! My attempt at explaining the world of video marketing for social media. I hope you found it helpful and that you’ll give it a try. And remember, if I can figure it out, anyone can!
